A woman and her daughter were killed and another girl injured on Tuesday when an army vehicle hit them after the driver lost control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, police said.

The vehicle, which was part of an army convoy, later overturned.

A police officer said, “An army vehicle, which was part of a convoy, went out of the driver’s control and turned turtle on the road at Panzgam in Kupwara district.”

Reports said a mob torched an army vehicle immediately after the accident. Police later dispersed the protestors.

He added, “The vehicle hit a 35-year-old woman, identified as Naza Begum, and her two daughters. The mother died on the spot while her 22-year-old daughter Saima succumbed to injuries at a hospital.”

The other daughter is undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, Northern Command spokesman Colonel S.D. Goswami said that the army’s Udhampur-based Northern Command has assured full cooperation in the investigation into the circumstances that led to the accident.

A police case has been registered and an investigation launched into the accident.
