Assembly Elections 2022: Voting underway in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa; 165 seats in fray

Voting is underway in three states namely Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Goa for the assembly polls covering 165 seats. While this is the second phase of elections for Uttar Pradesh, the polling process will conclude in Goa and Uttarakhand in a single-phase today.

Voting is taking place for 55 seats in the second phase of the UP polls today. The state had gone for polls for 58 seats of Western Uttar Pradesh in the first phase.

Uttarakhand has 70 seats, while Goa assembly has 40 seats.

The BJP had won 38 out of these 55 seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2017. In Uttarakhand, the BJP had won the elections in Uttarakhand in 2017 dislodging the then Chief Minister Harish Rawat from his chief minister’s post.

However, the Hindutva party has had to change three chief ministers as it feared growing resentment over its poor governance in the hilly state.

In Goa, the BJP had performed badly five years ago, winning only 13 out of 40 seats but the party managed to form its government by engineering a split in the Congress and taking support from smaller parties. This year, the Congress and the Goa Forward Party have come together to contest the polls.
