Banerjee tweeted, “It is once again an overwhelming victory of Ma, Mati, Manush. My heartiest congratulations to the people of Asansol, Bidhannagar, Siliguri ; Chandanagore for having put their faith and confidence on All India Trinamool Congress candidates in the Municipal Corporation elections.”

According to the latest trends, Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress was leading in 54 wards in Asansol, which has 106 wards in total. The BJP was leading in just four. The Trinamool was leading in 39 out of 41 wards in Biddhannagar, while Congress is ahead in one ward here. In Chandannagar, the TMC was ahead in 19 out of 32 wards, while the Left candidate was leading in one. The Trinamool was also ahead in 38 out of 47 wards in Siliguri, while the BJP and the Left Front were leading in four wards each.

The Trinamool supremo said that Gautam Deb will become the Mayor of Siliguri.

Banerjee, according to Indian Express, told a Bengali news channel, “I want to congratulate the people for giving us this mandate. The election was held peacefully. The State Election Commission and administration played important roles to ensure people cast their votes. There was no trouble anywhere during polling. This verdict will allow us to work for the people with more determination. I would urge our workers and leaders not to respond to any provocation.”

This is another setback for the BJP after the Hindutva party suffered a humiliating defeat in the last year’s assembly polls.
