Authorities in Japan say that the country’s former prime minister, Shinzo Abe, continues to remain in ‘grave condition’ after being shot twice at a political event. Abe had to be airlifted to a hospital after a shooter shot at him twice.
According to sources, Abe was conscious and responding when he was airlifted to the hospital.
Abe was giving a speech in the city of Nara for this Sunday’s elections to the Upper House. According to local media reports, Abe is reported to be in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest, suggesting that he’s in a very serious condition.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters, “Currently doctors are doing everything they can.”
His attacker, who used an improvised gun, said that he disagreed with the former prime minister’s policies and political views.
Gun crime is extremely rare in Japan.
Abe sustained bullet wounds on the right of his neck as well as suffering subcutaneous bleeding under the left part of his chest.
