Two persons have been arrested in Muzaffarnagar for allegedly smuggling 43 cartons of illegal liquor worth about Rs seven lakh into Uttar Pradesh, ahead of the Panchayat elections in the state, an official said today.
District excise officer Karunendra Singh said that the excise department officials along with the police intercepted a car last evening near Mathura village in Charthawal area and arrested two persons with the liquor, being smuggled from Haryana.
The accused were identified as Harbindra and Shyamlal while their accomplice Ramesh managed to escape, he added.
20 forged holograms and a car were also seized from their possession, Singh informed.
According to a PTI report, the liquor is worth around Rs seven lakh, the district excise officer said, adding, it was being smuggled to UP for supplying during the upcoming Panchayat polls.
