Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday visited Amritsar ahead of the next month’s assembly elections. While he was welcomed by Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu, at least five MPs from Gandhi’s party decided to skip the event. They included Manish Tewari, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Jasbir Singh Gill, Preneet Kaur and Mohammad Sadiq.

Gill was quoted by ANI as saying, “We had no problem in going. We came to know that the event was for the 117 candidates. Neither the PCC president nor the CM invited us, not even the general secretary incharge. Had we been invited, we would have definitely gone.”

Informing about Gandhi’s planned visit, Sidhu had earlier tweeted, “Our Visionary leader Rahul Gandhi Ji is visiting Punjab on 27th January. Every Congress worker looks forward to welcoming him in Punjab.”

While in Amritsar, Rahul Gandhi also visited the famous Golden Temple.
