The 48-year-old cop was seriously injured. Local villagers saw him profusely bleeding and took him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Cops have still not identified Gani’s killers.

Rajasthan has become notorious for the rise in incidents of mob lynchings. This has continued even after the Congress formed the government in the state by defeating the BJP in the last assembly elections.

The Congress government led by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had come under heavy criticism recently after it emerged that one of the first victims of mob lynchings in the state, Pehku Khan, was charge-sheeted after his death. An embarrassed Gehlot had issued a desperate clarification, but facts pertaining to the charge-sheet showed how Pehlu was indeed named in the charge-sheet. His name was later removed from the charge-sheet following a national outrage.

Last year in September, one Rakbar Khan was lynched to death by a Hindutva mob on suspicion of smuggling a cow. In December 2017, an elderly Muslim, identified as Afrazul, was attacked with an axe before being set on fire alive. His killer Shambhu Lal was hailed as a hero by Hindutva gangs in Rajasthan. This incident too had taken place in the same Rajsamand.
