Bharat Bandh LIVE: Life paralysed across India

Dalit protesters have thronged to streets in huge numbers across India to protest against the dilution of the SC/ST Act by the Supreme Court. Their call for Bharat Bandh has had a crippling effect across India. Faced with the impact of the call for bandh, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that his government did not agree with the Supreme Court and it will file a review petition against the apex court’s verdict.

Among those voicing their concerns over the dilution of the SC/ST Act by the Supreme Court are also some of the ruling BJP MPs. BJP’s Dalit MP, Udit Raj, was quoted by News18, “The government failed to communicate to Dalits and that is the reason we are seeing this protest. We should not link this to politics but it is true that the Dalits came out in support of the government during elections but are now upset. I appeal to the activists to protest peacefully.”
