Police in Jammu and Kashmir say that at least 12 people had died in a stampede at the famous Vaishno Devi shrine. Several others are believed to have sustained injuries. They have been shifted to Naraina hospital.

Dr Gopal Dutt, Block Medical Officer, Community Health Centre was earlier quoted by news agency as saying, “6 dead in the stampede at Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan, exact number not there yet. Their post mortem will be done. Injured being taken to Naraina hospital, total number of injured not confirmed either.”

A large number of Hindu devotees had arrived at the temple for prayers on the day first day of the New Year when the stampede took place.
