AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Saturday lodged an official complaint before the Varanasi ADM against Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging violations during the roadshow on Thursday and Friday. Singh alleged that the BJP had spent Rs 1.27 crore on the roadshow, held prior to Modi’s filing of nomination. This, he argued, was in gross violation of the EC guidelines that restricted such expenses to Rs 70 lakh.
Reacting to the news, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP chief, Arvind Kejriwal, urged all political parties to unite for strong action against Modi. He wrote, “All parties shud come together and seek strong action against blatant use of money against all norms. EC shud act strictly as per law without being cowed down by who is the person involved.”

Modi had staged two mega road shows on Thursday and Friday before he filed his nomination as a Lok Sabha candidate from Varanasi. Modi’s critics had alleged that most people taking part in his road show were hired from outside to establish the popularity of the prime minister in his constituency.

Kejriwal’s party also shared a video of Singh explaining the violation by Modi and his party to the ADM. In the video, Singh can be seen taking the official through the estimated expenses. He said that he had arrived at a Rs 1.27 crore figure by taking conservative estimates of the expense incurred by the BJP in organising the road show in Varanasi.
