BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy on Tuesday exploded in anger as he questioned the Indian government’s role on the issue of Russia’s military strikes on Ukraine. In a veiled attack on Narendra Modi, Swamy said that ‘a Prime Minister of 1.4 billion cultured people cannot be a political hijda (eunuch).’
Swamy took to Twitter to write, “Now that it is clear that what Russia has done in Ukraine violates BRICS Resolution in Delhi Declaration of last year. Will Modi have the guts to tell Putin to back off?”
A Twitter user sought to defend Modi by stating that the latter was ‘caught between a rock & a hard place’ adding that the ‘best is to play neutral which he (Modi) is doing.’
A visibly angry Swamy replied, “A Prime Minister of 1.4 billion cultured people cannot be a political hijda (eunuch).”

In a separate tweet, Swamy wrote, “Have India’s policy makers decided to commit Sati with Putin? When barbarians come from abroad, it was considered a noble womanly act to commit Sati. Not now. Women are now back to be like Durga, Sarasvati, or Lakshmi. They are equal not property. So Bharat Mata demands no Sati.”
This came hours before it emerged that an Indian student from Karnataka was killed in a heavy Russian shelling in the easter Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Naveen Shekharappa Gyandagoudar, who hailed from the Haveri district in Karnataka, 300km from Bengaluru, was in his final year of medicine at Kharkiv National Medical University.
The 21-year-old Indian student’s killing has left netizens seething as they attacked the Indian government for apathy, adding that the deceased could have been saved.
