Authorities in the US say that at least four people had lost their lives in another act of mass shooting inside an Indiana mall. The death toll could have been significantly higher had a ‘good samaritan’ not reacted promptly to kill the shooter.
The deadly incident took place inside a mall in Greenwood when the shooter carrying a rifle and several magazines of ammunition entered the mall’s food court and started firing indiscriminately. The mass shooting ended after the shooter was killed a passer-by, who was lawfully carrying a gun.
Chief Jim Ison of the Greenwood Police Department said that most of the victims were women, adding that a 12-year-old girl had also sustained injuries. Ison, however, did not elaborate on the motive behind the shooting.
Mayor Mark Myers, according to New York Times, said that the public faced no further threat and that the Police Department was in control of the scene. “I’ve been a police officer most of my life… Still, this is incredibly shocking, to not only me but our entire community,” Myers was quoted as saying.
Who Is 32-year-old ‘Good Samaritan’?
Speaking at a news conference on Sunday, Police Chief Ison said, “It appears that a good Samaritan that was armed observed the shooting in progress and shot the shooter.”
Ison described the ‘good samaritan’ as a 32-year-old, who hailed from Bartholomew County, which is about 35 miles south of the mall. The authorities have decided not to reveal the identity of the ‘good samaritan.’
Myers showered praises on the ‘good samaritan’ saying that he was ‘able to shoot the assailant and stop further bloodshed.’
“I am grateful for his quick action and heroism in this situation,” Myers said.
One eyewitness, Olivia Harding, told CNN that she was at the Old Navy in the mall when she and her mother heard four gunshots and thought the nearby carousel was breaking down.
“Next thing you know, you hear about six more shots and you see everybody running,” Harding was quoted as saying.
America has seen an alarming rise in gun-related violence in recent weeks with politicians failing to united in tackling the gun culture in the country.
