Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra recently took to her social media pages to flaunt her new magazine cover, where she was seen posing for the camera in a designer saree without a blouse. Moments later, her timeline was flooded with criticism with trolls targeting her for ‘not wearing’ a blouse; which they said was an integral part of a sari.

Sharing her magazine cover photo shoot, Priyanka wrote, “Fashion is such an important part of global culture, often arising from centuries of tradition, and doesn’t go out of style when the seasons change. The ‘Saree’ is one of the most iconic and recognized silhouettes from India. To me, its beauty lies in its versatility, not just in drape and fabric. It embodies elegance, femininity, and power, and I love how I feel when I’m wearing one.”

She also informed that the saree worn for the magazine shoot was designed by Tarun Tahiliani.

No sooner did she share her photo, her followers began to troll her for not wearing a blouse. One wrote, “Last time I checked being creative meant more than being naked…FYI @priyankachopra a “Saree” comes with a blouse! Just in case you forgot. My problem is if you wanna go topless thats absolutely fine!…but wearing a saree & NOT even showing it in the picture does not do justice to you or the culture!”

Another user wrote, “Oh don’t do this. Don’t potray our culture in a wrong way. This is not our culture.” Another user, her namesake, commented, “Not really how saree is worn today or at least last 300 years. Unless this is 10th century fashion when women in india didnt wear blouses.”

Days later, Tahiliani took to Instagram to defend Priyanka. He wrote, “Only Priyanka Chopra could bring her insouciance that she carries and take the alluring sultry persona from Bajirao Mastani across oceans and lands with the same surefooted agility on the cover of INSTYLE. Taking the saree global, proud of her identity and the versatility of the saree – a metaphor for her own versatility. The face of India globally.”
