Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar has found himself at the centre of incessant social media roasting after he decided to promote the official Twitter account of the Mumbai civic body, the BMC. His haters on the microblogging site attacked him by invoking his Canadian citizenship status.

Taking to Twitter, Akshay wrote over the weekend, “The BMC is now on twitter as @mybmc, you can now tweet your suggestions/ grievances to BMC directly and get them addressed. Try it now to make your voice heard directly.:

His act earned him plaudits from the civic body, which thanked him for his efforts to popularise its Twitter account. It wrote, “Thank you Mr @akshaykumar for helping us bring maximum Mumbaikars together on this medium to take up the #CollectiveResponsibility of keeping our city at its best. We look forward to effectively addressing people’s grievances & also sensitising them of the role they can play.”

No sooner did Akshay post his tweet, he began to face social media roasting with many slamming him for his Canadian citizenship.

Akshay had made a stunning confession in May this year stating that he held a Canadian passport. He had written, “I really don’t understand the unwarranted interest and negativity about my citizenship. I have never hidden or denied that I hold a Canadian passport. It is also equally true that I have not visited Canada in the last seven years.”

What’s amazing is that other Bollywood stars such as music director Vishal Dadlani and Dino Morea too posted similar tweets plugging the BMC’s Twitter account, but they did not face such brutal trolling.
