A video of BJP MP from Delhi, Meenakshi Lekhi, talking about black money and impact on common people has now gone viral on social media.
Her comments are now being linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement on demonetisation.
In the video Lekhi is heard saying how the rich will convert their black money into new currency notes but it’s the poor who will suffer the most. She was responding to reporters’ questions on the possibility of demonetisation by the then UPA government (See videos).
In one video, she is heard saying, “The present government is not in a position to measure the correct quantum of black money because those who have the black money will actually convert into new currency notes. Now the sufferers are the aam aurats(women) and aadmis(men). Those who are illiterates, who have no access to the banking facilities. And they will be ones, who will affected by such diversionary measures. People who have no bank accounts, their life savings will be targetted.”
Lekhi’s statement will cause huge embarrassment to the BJP leadership including the prime minister. The government has justified the ban on Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 claiming the move to be a masterstroke in the fight against black money.
The opposition parties, however, have condemned Modi’s announcement with some even calling it draconian.
