The introduction of the most fuel-efficient and smallest 800cc diesel engine by Maruti Suzuki is underway. Celerio compact car will be the first to get the engine in the next two months.
The indigenously-developed engine will be the smallest with a fuel efficiency of 30 km per litre, reports say. Presently Maruti sells diesel cars with a 1300cc engine manufactured under license from Fiat. The new Celerio would make an attractive offering for price-conscious Indian users.
Maruti is really optimistic about Celerio Diesel. “With probably the highest fuel efficiency in the country and an attractive pricing, we expect this car to pick up good volumes, around several thousands monthly,” an official said.
Celerio petrol sells around 5000 units monthly and is priced between Rs 3.9 lakh and Rs 4.96 lakhs. A highly fuel-efficient diesel engine with a low-maintenance cost is hoped to be a major attraction for buyers. There are plans to strap the engine to other mini cars. Also, Maruti is all set to step into the commercial vehicle segment this year.
