More misery likely as deadline to use old notes ends tonight

There will be more bad news for ordinary public struggling to get alternative currency, as the deadline for them to use their old defunct Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes for paying household utility bills, fuel, taxes and fees and purchases from co-operative stores comes to end at midnight tonight.

These exemptions were made in light of PM Narendra Modi’s demonetisation announcement on 8 November. This list was later expanded to include payments for metro rail tickets, highway and road toll, purchase of medicines on doctor prescription from the government and private pharmacies, LPG gas cylinders, railway catering, electricity and water bills and ASI monument entry tickets.

As banks struggled to give alternate currency, the deadline was extended by another 72 hours.

With these exemption gone, there will be added misery to people, who’ve been facing incredible hardships because of the restricted access to their own money kept in banks

More than 60 people have already died due to demonetisation related stress.

PM Modi has been facing widespread protests by his political rivals even though a snap poll by his own mobile App gave him near 100% approval.
