Russia’s decision to invade Ukraine from land, sea and air has posed serious risks to journalists covering the conflict. This was evident during a LIVE BBC transmission from Kyiv on Thursday as air raid sirens forced two seasoned war correspondents of the BBC to take a break from the broadcast only to reappear on screen in flak jackets.

Lyse Doucet and Clive Myrie were busy analysing the rapidly developing situation from Kyiv when sirens went off amidst the LIVE transmission. Doucet said, “We spoke to a philosopher who said, ‘Ukrainians are just trying to live a normal life. I have three daughters. But quite possible this is the end of our normal lives.’ And this siren has just reminded us, be careful, be careful.”

Myrie agreed but immediately took a break from the transmission. Moments later, both appeared on screen but were fully protected flak jackets. Myrie said, “We had heard the air raid sirens, we’ve put on our flak jackets. One wonders what people of this city and indeed from across the country are now thinking.”

Doucet replied, “The siren has spoken. The siren spoke LIVE in our broadcast. That siren not only strikes fear in the hearts of all the Ukrainians, who’ve been asked to stay home, a siren telling them something even more dangerous is to come.”

Both Doucet and Myrie have covered many wars from Afghanistan and Iraq to name a few for the BBC.
