Authorities say that at least 46 people have been found dead in an abandoned lorry on the outskirts of San Antonio, Texas. Officials have taken 16 people including four children to a hospital for treatment. Those alive suffered from heat stroke and heat exhaustion and were ‘hot to the touch.’ Authorities are confident that those taken to hospital will recover and survive.

San Antonio is situated at around 250km from the US-Mexican border and is a big transit route for those smuggling humans.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, according to the BBC, said, “They had families… and were likely trying to find a better life. It’s nothing short of a horrific, human tragedy.”

Authorities were alerted about the abandoned lorry in question by a nearby worker, who heard the cry for help on Monday evening.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on social media, “I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of life today and am praying for those still fighting for their lives. Far too many lives have been lost as individuals — including families, women, and children — take this dangerous journey.”

In 2017, 10 immigrants were found dead inside a similar tractor trailer outside a Walmart in San Antonio. But this is by far the most horrific incident of human tragedy.

Republican Governor Greg Abbott held US President Joe Biden responsible for the deaths, terming the tragedy as a ‘result of his deadly open border policies.’
