World Test Championship Final: It’s advantage New Zealand after India bowled out for 217 in first innings

India were bowled out for just 217 by New Zealand on the third day of the World Test Championship final at Southampton. In reply, the Kiwis ended day three at 101-2  immediately after Devon Conway was dismissed for 54. Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson were at the crease, batting at 12 and 0 respectively.

India resumed day three at 146/3, but suffered from a spectacular batting collapse in the face of an incredibly spirited attack by New Zealand fast bowlers namely Kyle Jamieson, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner and Tim Southee. While Jamieson finished with an impressive spell of 5-31, Wagner and Boult shared two wickets each. The lone wicket of Ravichandran Ashwin went to Southee.

Jamieson later told Sky Sports, “To start the way we did and keep them to what we did was pretty pleasing. Yesterday I felt good, but was tentative. Today I felt free and able to bring my length fuller.”

New Zealand made a cautious but solid start as the rain continued to play spoilsport. The Kiwis lost their first wicket in Tom Latham when the team’s total was 70. Latham made 30 before being caught by Virat Kohli off the bowling of Ashwin. Devon Conway appeared to be heading to another fine century but fell for 54 off the bowling of Ishant Sharma, thank to a great catch of Mohammad Shami.

New Zealand need just 116 runs to surpass India’s total when they resume their first innings on Monday. However, experts have been unanimous in declaring that the day three belonged to the Kiwis.

Commentator Harsha Bhogle tweeted, “India need to come back strongly in this test match after a day that belonged entirely to New Zealand. There is enough time left in this game for a result.”

Renowned cricket journalist Ayaz Memon agreed as he tweeted, ‘India end day with a wicket, but day clearly belongs to NZ. With ball and bat, have shown determination and deep ambition. But Test delicately poised. A good first session with the ball would throw the match open.”
