Rohit Sharma named new T20 captain for Team India, Virat Kohli dropped for New Zealand tour

As expected, Rohit Sharma has been named the new captain of the Indian team in the T20 format as the BCCI announced the squad for the upcoming New Zealand series. Virat Kohli, who led the Indian team for the last time against Namibia in the T20 World Cup, did not find a place in the side.

The Indian team will play three T20 matches at home against New Zealand from 17 November.

The first match will be played in Jaipur on 17 November, the second match in Ranchi on 19 November and the last match of the series in Kolkata two days later.

The 16-member squad will be led by Rohit Sharma with KL Rahul being his deputy.

Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Venkatesh Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Harshal Patel, Mohd. Siraj.

The Indian cricket board also announced the 14-member squad for India A, which will tour South Africa later this month to play three four-day matches.

Priyank Panchal (Captain), Prithvi Shaw, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Devdutt Padikkal, Sarfaraz Khan, Baba Aparajith, Upendra Yadav (wicket-keeper), K Gowtham, Rahul Chahar, Saurabh Kumar, Navdeep Saini, Umran Malik, Ishan Porel, Arzan Nagwaswalla.

India failed to qualify for the semi-final in the ongoing T20 World Cup were knocked out from the group stage. Though they won their last three matches, the defeats to Pakistan and New Zealand meant that Virat Kohli-led side simply failed to get enough points to make it to the knock-out stage.
