Mohammed Shami on Thursday became the most successful Indian bowler in the history of World Cup as the player from Uttar Pradesh wreaked havoc in India’s match against Sri Lanka. Shami picked up his second five-wicket haul in just three matches that he has played in this World Cup as India thrashed Sri Lanka by 302 runs. Shami has now taken 14 wickets in the three matches that he was allowed to represent in the ongoing World Cup.
Batting first, India piled up a total of 357-8 in 50 overs. Shubman Gill made 92, while Virat Kohli contributed with a knock of 88 and Shreyas Iyer 82. Madushanka was the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka with a spell of 5-80.
Sri Lanka started their run chase on a disastrous note, losing wickets at regular intervals. Both Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah took wickets on the very first ball of their spell. Shami finished with an impressive spell of 5-18 in five overs while Siraj finished with a spell of 3-16 in seven overs. Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja shared one wicket each..
With today’s win, India have now secured a semi-final spot in the World Cup. They are the first team to do so. India are also the only team to not lose a single match up until now.
