Lawyer, who had 20 AAP MLAs disqualified, faces social media embarrassment for past tweets targetting Islam, women and RSS

Lawyer Prashant Patel shot to fame late last month after the Election Commission of India recommended the disqualifications of 20 AAP MLAs in office of profit case. Patel was widely hailed for being a crusader against corruption with TV channels making a beeline to have him as a guest.

In several TV interviews, he was heard saying that he had no political affiliation and his fight was simply against corruption. His pinned Twitter post also reads, “I am a proud Hindu and ardent devotee of Hanuman Ji.This is a matter of principles. I have nothing personal against Arvind Kejriwal or these AAP MLAs.”

However, the lawyer has had to face considerable embarrassment in the last two days after social media users began posting his past tweets targetting Islam, the RSS and women in general.

One user Navendu Singh in particular has been tirelessly digging out Patel’s past tweets attacking Islam and supporting BJP. In one tweet, Navendu tagged a local BJP functionary, Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga and BJP-Akali MLA MS Sirsa, drawing their attention to a screenshot allegedly of Patel’s tweet claiming that ‘1600 naked dead bodies of Hindu Women were found from Golden Temple after operation Blue Star. (sic)”

In another tweet, user Navendu has tagged the BJP MP and Supreme Court lawyer, Minakshi Lekhi, drawing her attention to a screenshot of a tweet, allegedly posted by Patel.

Another screenshot posted by Navendu quotes Patel as having called Bollywood superstar Salman Khan a ‘pig.’

Patel was widely condemned for posting a fake photo in a bid to shame a victim of sexual harassment and kidnapping, Varnika Kundu, last year. He had posted several tweets mocking the girl, identified as Vernika Kundu, by addressing her as the so-called ‘victim’ and even casting aspersion on the IAS officer’s integrity.

His tweets read, “So called victim daughter of IAS from Chandigarh with Vikas Barala. This story is as true as like Jasleen Kaur of Delhi & of Rohtak Sisters. Corrupt Bureaucracy is upset with Honest CM Khattar. That IAS Kundu is close to Hooda. BTW, Why no medical of Girl, was she also drunked? ”

In his subsequent tweet, Patel had also demanded action against the girl for violating traffic rules since she had made a distress call while driving the car. He, however, did not explain what could be a better and safer option for a girl to call police while being allegedly chased and stalked at midnight.

Kundu had later clarified that the men in the photo were not the accused but her friends and it was taken long ago. BJP spokesperson from Mumbai, Shaina NC, who too had shared the photo, had to apologise later.

Some Twitter users have begun demanding a case be filed against the lawyer for hurting religious sentiments with his abusive tweets. In some of his tweets, Patel is also alleged to have targetted senior BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj, LK Advani and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who’s accused of a murder.

In one tweet posted on 28 July 2012, Patel is accusing veteran journalist Rajdeep Sardesai of having called for the genocide of 1,000 Hindus. We’ve also included the screenshot of his libelous tweet in case he chooses to delete his old post as he’s now being accused of doing, particularly after his controversial tweets surfaced on social media since Saturday.

Speaking to Janta Ka Reporter, Patel said, “Look, trolls of Aam Aadmi Party are sharing my old tweets. Everyone in this country has the right to express his views. The same way that you are free to write a news about me, I am also free to express my views. You can write whatever you wish to.”

Here are some of his old tweets that he has begun deleting to avoid more embarrassment.
