Youth in UP arrested for posting Facebook comments on SP leader

A youth has been arrested from Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district after he appeared to have questioned ruling Samajwadi party leader Shafiqur Rahman Barq’s patriotism through a Facebook post.

The youth named Navneet Vashne questioned Barq’s loyalty to the country on the grounds of his earlier protesting against the national song ‘Vande Matram’ in Lok Sabha four years ago.

“Yes, I did a boycott in Lok Sabha four years ago against ‘Vande Matram’. However, my patriotism cannot be questioned,” said former MP Barq.

Superintendent of Police, Chambal, Atul Saxena said his team was sure Vashney was the boy who had made the Facebook post.

A few days ago, the Supreme Court had objected against a similar arrest of this nature. Police have therefore registered the matter under Sections 153 A, 505 (2) and 504 for religious incitement instead of Section 66 A that refers to the IT Act. Section 66 A is now abolished.

Meanwhile, the accused boy had a different take on his arrest and said that he had only posted a photo of Barq on Facebook.

“I had just posted a photo of Barq and this [unfortunately] constitutes my crime,” said Vashne.
