BJP Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy has urged the Centre’s Narendra Modi government to become serious of India’s stakes in Afghanistan after the Taliban took control of India’s neighbouring nation.
Swamy tweeted, “Taliban completed its takeover. Time for Modi to get serious about governance for battle. Pakistan mentored Taliban is now within striking distance. China will urge them on and US is good only for supplying weapons. Let us get Bharat Mata’s destined duty for us done.”

After seizing control of Mazar-e-Sharif and Jalalabad, the Taliban met with very little resistance in taking control of the Afghan capital of Kabul. The photo of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani hugging the Taliban delegation in the Presidential Palace has gone viral on the internet. There are reports that Ghani would hand over the power to the Taliban peacefully before leaving the country.
People in Kabul have begun fleeing the Afghan capital as news of the Taliban’s entry emerges. According to BBC, long queues of cars have formed as people try to find a way out of the city. Banks have also been busy as residents try to withdraw their savings.
Pakistan has closed the Torkham border crossing with Afghanistan after the Taliban seized the Afghan side of the border. This means that Afghans wishing to leave the country now only can do so from the Kabul International Airport.
According to news agency Reuters, US officials have said that diplomats were being ferried by helicopter from the US embassy in the fortified Wazir Akbar Khan district to the international airport.
