A CBI court in Ghaziabad on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment three policemen for killing a young woman in a “fake encounter” in 2000.

Special judge Navneet Kumar found then deputy superintendent Arun Kaushik and constables Surendra and Bhagwan Sahai guilty of killing Smita Bhaduri, 26, on January 14, 2000.

She was going with her friend Mohit Tyagi on national highway 58 when police intercepted their car and shot her dead.

Later, police claimed they had killed a woman member of a criminal gang while her accomplice sustained gunshot injuries.

During the trial that lasted 15 years, the court found that the police story was fabricated and that Bhaduri was killed in a “fake encounter”.
