Terror-accused BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya Thakur on Wednesday once again shamed India by addressing the killer of Mahatma Gandhi as a patriot inside the parliament. She had referred to Godse, the first terrorist of independent India, as a ‘patriot’ during the Lok Sabha polls this year. As expected, the spineless opposition parties remained mute spectators to such an insult meted out to the father of the nation.
DMK’s A Raja was speaking on the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill when he quoted a statement by Godse. It was here when Thakur, accused in the 2008 Malegaon terror attack, objected shouting that ‘you can not give examples of deshbhakts (patriots).” Her comments evoked instant angry reactions from a group of opposition leaders. But, it wasn’t clear whether they were upset over Thakur calling Gandhi’s killer as a patriot or for disrupting Raja during his speech.

When Thakur had insulted Gandhi during the Lok Sabha campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that he may never be able to forgive her for her remarks.
As expected, the Congress simply chose to register its protest on Twitter as the party tweeted, “Repeatedly referring to Nathuram Godse as a “deshbhakt” is a perfect representation of BJP’s deplorable hate politics. Will PM Modi condemn Pragya Thakur’s remarks or continue to stay silent?”
As for the BJP, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi defended Thakur saying that she did not name Godse and there was nothing on the record. Meanwhile, social media users have erupted in anger with many asking the PM to remove her from the party failing which he will have no right to show his respect for Gandhi ever in future.
