Sushma Swaraj earns plaudits for her UNGA speech

India’s foreign minister, Sushma Swaraj on Saturday earned plenty of plaudits for impressive speech at the UN General Assembly.

Swaraj, who chose to speak in Hindi, left her audience captive as she spoke about her government’s achievement, climate change and, more crucially, Pakistan. While speaking about Pakistan, Swaraj taunted how the country had been transformed into a failed state while India had moved on the path of development in the last 70 years since partition.

Taking a dig at Pakistan, she said, “We set up IITs, IIMs, AIIMS and ISRO. What did Pakistan make? They set up Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Haqqani Network, Hizbul Mujahiddeen. We produced scholars, doctors, engineers. What have you produced? You have produced terrorists.”

Swaraj did not stop here. In her 21-minute speech, she mentioned Pakistan twice while stressing India’s stand for peaceful relationship with the neighbouring country.

She said, “Pakistan’s PM claimed that his nation’s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah had bequeathed a foreign policy based on peace and friendship. I would like to remind him that while it remains open to question whether Jinnah Sahab actually advocated such principles. What is beyond doubt is that PM Modi has, from the moment he took his oath of office, offered the hand of peace, and friendship.”

In a reference to China India’s request to blacklist Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar, Swaraj asked the UN how it intended to fight terrorism collectively when it didn’t know who the enemy was.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was quick to complimentSwaraj for her excellent speech.

He wrote on Twitter, “Incredible speech by EAM @SushmaSwaraj at the @UN! She has made India extremely proud at the world stage. EAM @SushmaSwaraj was insightful in identifying global challenges & strongly reiterated India’s commitment to create a better planet. A strong message was given by @SushmaSwaraj Ji on the dangers of terrorism and why we have to unite and fight this menace.”

PM Modi wasn’t the only one impressed with Swaraj’s speech. An overwhelming majority of social media users including her political adversaries were left mesmerised by her eloquence and clarity of thoughts.
