Sunil Jain, who edited Financial Express, dies of COVID-19; his last tweet, posted 14 days ago, read, “I’m in safe hands”

Sunil Jain, the managing editor of Financial Express, died of COVID-19, 14 days after he was admitted to Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences. His last tweet, posted on 3 May, displays his hope for a recovery.

PM Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind were among notable people sending condolences on Jain’s demise. Kovind wrote, “Sunil Jain was an editor known for his candour and forthright views. It was a treat to read his columns. After his untimely demise, his absence will be deeply felt in the world of journalism. My condolences to his family and friends.”

PM Modi wrote, “You left us too soon, Sunil Jain. I will miss reading your columns and hearing your frank as well as insightful views on diverse matters. You leave behind an inspiring range of work. Journalism is poorer today, with your sad demise. Condolences to family and friends. Om Shanti.”

Owner of The Indian Express, Anant Goenka, tweeted, “Sunil Jain, Managing Editor of Financial Express lost his battle to Covid today. He was a friend, of unquestionable integrity & inspired us with his professional commitment. Privileged to have known him, will cherish his passion, balance & wisdom.Your Express family will miss you.”

On 1 May, Jain had revealed that he was suffering from COVID-19 as he complained of a drop in his oxygen saturation. He had tweeted, “I have been battling with 85+ levels for a week — mostly 88-90 — and each time that happens,8-9 times a day, I do Pronal Breathing Doctors want to avoid hospital because there is no space, so this is the only way Very scary, especially at night, so helps if someone next to you.”

Two days later, the senior journalist had informed all how he was able to get admission in the AIIMS stating that he was finally in ‘safe hands.’ “Thank you everyone for all the help I don’t even know whom.all to thank Am in AIIMS emergency now So I’m safe hands.”
