The Congress Working Committee on Monday approved the poll schedule for the party’s President’s election. The process to elect the new leader will start with issue of notification on 1 December, reported PTI quoting sources.

The party also released the time table for the election process announcing that the election for the new president’s post will be held on 16 December, while the counting will take place on 19 December, a day after the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh results are announced.

The party’s head of communications, Randeep Surjewala, posted the timeline on Twitter;

This was after the CWC met at the party president, Sonia Gandhi’s residence at 10 Janpath in Delhi.

Sources within the party on Sunday said that the Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi was all set to take over the party’s reins in early December, days before Gujarat goes to polls in two stages.

Various Pradesh Congress Committees (State units) have already written to Sonia Gandhi endorsing Rahul’s future appointment as her successor.

Analysts say that Rahul’s election as the new Congress president just before the Gujarat polls will be an utterly bold move indicating the Congress party’s election preparedness.
