Congress president Sonia Gandhi is slated to hold a road show in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bastion, Varanasi, on 2 August.
Senior party leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad, chief ministerial candidate Sheila Dixit and newly appointed UPCC president Raj Babbar will accompany the Congress president during the road show.
Confirming the news, party MLA from Pindra assembly constituency Ajay Rai, who has been made in-charge of Varanasi division, said that workers had “requested Soniaji to hold a programme in Varanasi, and she readily agreed”.
The event will be a part of a two-month long campaign the Congress has planned with an eye on the assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh.
Party said that with the slogan “Sattais saal, UP behaal’ (27 years when UP suffered)”, it will highlight how Uttar Pradesh has suffered in last 27 years of poor governance.
It will also organise 27 bus ‘yatras’, covering the length and breadth of the state with key leaders including Azad, Babbar and Dikshit.
On July 29, Rahul Gandhi will meet 50,000 Congress workers in Lucknow and discuss about the strategy for the polls.
The Congress is trying to revive its lost ground in Uttar Pradesh. The party is out of power in the state from last 27 years.
