Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday reportedly offered to resign from his post days after his party faced a near annihilation at the hands of Narendra Modi-led BJP. Gandhi made this offer during the Congress Working Committee meet, which was held in Delhi on Saturday. Also attending the meeting was Gandhi’smother Sonia Gandhi and sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The CWC is the highest decision making body of the Congress. The Saturday’s meeting lasted for four hours. The CWC is believed to have praised Gandhi and urged him to carry out the organisational restructuring.

Gandhi did not speak to media when he left the meeting venue. Other Congress leaders said that the party will issue an official statement soon.

While top Congress leadership may not have resigned, many state chiefs of the party have quit their posts since 23 May results that saw the Congress winning only 52 out of 542 seats, eight more than what it won in 2014.

Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar and Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan both have resigned owning the responsibility for the party’s defeat in their respective states. Chavan even claimed that Rahul Gandhi was alone was not responsible for the loss adding that every state party chief should resign from their posts.

Rahul Gandhi and his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, had launched an aggressive campaign across India while embarrassing Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Chowkidar Chor Hai campaign. However, their appeal did not appear to translate in votes as the BJP returned with a bigger majority than 2014. The saffron party alone won 302 seats, 12 more than 2014, and the NDA went on to secure 350 seats.
