Rahul Gandhi reacts on Diwali bonanza from Karnataka even as Kumaraswamy urges him to lead 2019 alliance

Hours after the Congress-JDS alliance in Karnataka dealt a severe blow to the BJP, Rahul Gandhi congratulated his party workers for Tuesday’s ‘decisive victory.’

He tweeted, “Congratulations to all the workers & leaders of the Congress party in Karnataka on the decisive victory of the Congress-JD(S) alliance in the By-Polls in the state. I thank each & every one of you, for your dedication & hard work that made this victory possible.”

The Congress-JDS combine won two Lok Sabha seats including the Bellary seat and both the assembly seats in Jamkhandi and Ramanagaram. The alliance won Mandya and Bellary Lok Sabha by huge margins. The consolation for the BJP came from Shivamogga, which was won the BS Yeddyurappa’s son BY Raghavendra, who defeated the JDS’s S Madhubangarappa by over 50,000 votes.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said that Rahul Gandhi should lead the grand alliance of non-BJP parties in 2019 parliamentary elections. Speaking to NDTV, Kumaraswamy said, “According to my analysis, it will be a mahagathbanhdhan sarkar (grand alliance government) in 2019. People will bless the grand alliance.”

Tuesday’s victory also showed that the BJP had been decimated in its own bastion.Analyst Arun Giri pointed out, “1. Bellary : BJP got 3.85 lacs, 1.5 lacs less than 2014..Cong bagged 6.28 lacs, 1.7 lacs more. 2. Jamkhandi: BJP got 11,000 votes more than assembly..Cong doubled its nos from 49k to 97,000. Shimoga – JDS Cong got jaw dropping 47%.. 2014 – INC 21% JDS 21%.”

If Tuesday’s results are an indication, then the saffron party is likely to face even more worrying time in 2019 during the Lok Sabha polls.
