Modi has faced widespread condemnation for inaction even when the second wave of pandemic left a trail of deaths across the country. Many criticised him for going ahead with his election rallies in Bengal where thousands of people gathered without wearing masks or following COVID-19 protocol.

Narendra Modi’s decision to address the nation comes a day after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson cancelled his India trip scheduled for next week. The UK has now placed India on the list of the banned countries for travel.

Hospitals across India are struggling to deal with the surge in COVID-19 patients with complaints of oxygen shortages emerging as the dangerous theme. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who tested positive for coronavirus, tweeted on Tuesday evening, “India is gasping for #Oxygen. Thanks to GOI’s incompetency & complacency.”
