Twitter users have reacted in shock after the Allahabad High Court granted bail to Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni’s son Ashish Mishra, the prime accused in the murder of protesting farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri last year.

Justice Rajeev Singh, who had reserved the order in the bail application filed by the union minister’s son, granted him bail on the day of the first phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

A report by NDTV said that the judge questioned the charges against Ashish Mishra and rejected the police investigation.

“In case, the story of the prosecution is accepted, thousands of protesters gathered at the place of incident and there might be a possibility that the driver tried to speed up the vehicle to save himself, on account of which, the incident had taken place,” the judge was quoted by Livelaw.

The Allahabad High Court added, “While considering the overall facts of the case, this Court cannot shut its eyes to the killing of three persons sitting in the Thar vehicle, including the driver, who were killed by the protesters.”

As expected, furious netizens took to social media to express their shock at the verdict. According to journalist Piyush Rai, while Ashish Mishra will be out on bail by tomorrow, the bail application of three of five arrested from the farmer’s side in the second case was rejected by a district judge in Lakhimpur Kheri.

Ashish Mishra is accused of running over protesting farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri in October last year. As many as eight people including four farmers had died in the massacre.

Ashish Mishra was summoned to appear before the police, but he refused to turn up amidst reports that the union minister’s son had fled to Nepal.

Ashish Mishra’s father is the junior home minister in the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
