Mehul Choksi may have taken his girlfriend on a romantic trip, was funding opposition United Progressive Party: Antigua PM Gaston Browne

Antigua PM Gaston Browne has sensationally revealed that the Gujarati billionaire businessman Mehul Choksi may have taken his girlfriend on a romantic trip to Dominica when he was caught by the authorities. According to Antigua Newsroom, Browne alleged that Choksi was also funding the country’s main opposition United Progressive Party.

Browne had earlier said that he was determined to deport Choksi to India since there was an Interpol notice against him for committing a serious financial fraud. The Antigua PM, however, said that it was still possible for Dominica to deport Choksi to India because he entered the country illegally.

The high court of Dominica is scheduled to decide Choksi’s fate on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Browne has also alleged that Choksi was funding the opposition party in Antigua. Taking a potshot at his political rivals, Browne wrote in a Facebook post, “After mischievously accusing my administration of habouring Mehul Choksi, who has an Interpol Red Notice, they are now seeking to sanitize this fugitive to get campaign funding. My administration’s revocation of Choksi’s citizenship has been frustrated by a litigation brought against the state. We are determined to revoke Choksi’s citizenship and to concurrently pursue his extradition to India to face criminal charges there.”

He added, “My request on behalf of Antigua & Barbuda, for Dominica to consider deporting Choksi directly to India, as a form of state cooperation to apprehend a fugitive, is perfectly acceptable. This request for state cooperation could never be construed by any law-abiding entity, of integrity and legitimate purpose to be an “ill considered utterance”.”

Choksi, who went missing from Antigua last week, and his nephew Nirav Modi are wanted for allegedly siphoning off Rs 13,500 crore of taxpayers’ money from the state-run Punjab National Bank (PNB). Nirav Modi, who is currently languishing in jail in London, is facing an extradition trial.

Both Modi and Choksi hail from PM Modi’s home state of Gujarat and were seen posing for the camera with the Indian premier in Davos days before fleeing from India.
