Major Leetul Gogoi, who had tied a man to a jeep in Kashmir purportedly as a shield against stone pelters, has been caught allegedly with a woman from a hotel in Sringar.

Local correspondents say that police caught Major Gogoi in ‘compromising position’ from Mamata Hotel in Sringar. “Major Gogoi is being detained as the questioning is underway. Cops are trying to ascertain the identity of the woman and another man accompanying them,” said one local source on the condition of anonymity.

The news was also tweeted by local journalist Ahmed Ali Fayyaz, who wrote, “Maj Litul Gogoi, who paraded a civilian Farooq Ahmed Dar of Chill Brass Beerwah on bonnet of his vehicle on 9/4/2017, was just now caught in comprising position with a woman, at Mamta Hotel Dalgate and arrested by Police Station Khanyar.”

Police sources said  legal proceedings have been initiated against Gogoi, who is posted in central Kashmir’s Budgam area.  Initial reports suggested the girl was a minor. But, later the police clarified that she was a woman. The cops were also proving the sex racket angle.

Soon, the documents emerged that appeared to confirm that Major Gogoi had indeed booked a room for two persons’ accommodation in Mamata Hotel.

A statement by police, as reported by Outlook, said, “Today at 1100 Hrs, Police Station Khanyar received a call from Hotel Grand Mamta that an altercation has taken place at the hotel. Accordingly a police party was deputed to the hotel, and it surfaced that a one woman (name withheld) and person namely Sameer Ahmed of Budgam had come to see some person. But the hotel receptions did not allow  them to meet the person. Meanwhile police party reached the spot and got all the persons to the police Station. Subsequently it was learnt that the woman had come to meet an army officer. The identity and particulars of the army officer has been collected by the police as well. The officials were handed over to their unit after due recording their statements. The statement of woman is also being recorded for probing the matter.”

Gogoi was later awarded by the Army for his ‘sustained efforts’ in counter-insurgency operations. The Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat had later awarded ‘Commendation Card’ for to the controversial army officer. The Army Chief’s ‘Commendation Card’ is considered a prestigious award and is given for distinguished services and devotion to duties.

A video, showing the man tied to the army vehicle during polling in the Srinagar Lok Sabha by-election on 9 April, had triggered a public outcry, prompting the Army to institute a probe.

The Commission of Inquiry was tasked to look into the circumstance that prompted Major Gogoi to tie the Kashmiri youth to the jeep’s bonnet as a “human shield”.
