LIVE UPDATES: Farmers’ intensify protests with one-day hunger strike; day’s other big stories

0

The nationwide agitation by farmers against the central government’s three controversial Farm Laws set to escalate as farmers have decided to stage a hunger strike between 8 AM and 5 PM today. Farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni said protests ‘will be staged at all district headquarters across the country and the farmers will submit a memorandum of demands addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.’

Tens of thousands of farmers are camping near the Delhi-Haryana border for nearly three weeks demanding the withdrawal of the controversial laws on agricultural reforms. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has maintained the reform in agri sector will help farmers boost their income, farmers have rejected his justification. On Sunday, they blocked the Delhi-Jaipur highway days after observing Bharat Bandh.

The central government has held several rounds of talks with farmer leaders but they have ended inconclusively. Meanwhile, many leaders belonging to the ruling BJP have accused foreign hands of fanning the farmers’ protests.

The extraordinary agitation launched by India’s peasant community has received support from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. As many as 36 British MPs had written to Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab requesting the UK’s intervention in India’s farmers’ protest.
