On Tuesday, speculations were on that KV Choudhry was tipped to take the post of CVC. According to reports, Choudhry who was the former Central Board Of Direct Taxation (CBDT) chief, is a clear favourite to become the next CVC.
But a letter written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 20 May by lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan objects to Choudhry’s appointment to the top job. In the letter, Bhushan states that Choudhry’s name came up four times in the list of persons who visited former CBI chief Ranjit Sinha at his official residence. The SC had noted in April 2015 that these meetings had an impact on the cases that were under CBI’s investigation.
Bhushan’s letter also mentions that Choudhry as in charge of the 2G scam investigation in income tax, failed to make any headway into the case. In the letter, Bhushan also talks about Choudhry’s inaction in the Nira Radia tapes controversy and also some financial irregularities in Ponty Chadha’s company Flora and Fauna in which he had allegedly reduced the undeclared wealth of the company by 200 crores.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting over the appointment of the next Central Information Commissioner (CIC) and Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) at his official residence at 7, Race Course Road.
The post of the Chief Information Commissioner has been lying vacant for over nine months after Rajiv Mathur’s term ended in August 2014, while Central Vigilance Commissioner Pradeep Kumar completed his term in September last year.
