Kapil Sibal has been a prominent name in the Congress party with former MP from Chandni Chowk occupying prominent posts in both terms of the UPA government at the Centre.
However, the lawyer-turned-politician had disappeared from active political scene since the UPA was dethroned in 2014 and Narendra Modi won a historic landslide. An articulate orator that he’s always been, many wondered why he was absent from TV debates on either defending his party or cornering the Centre’s Narendra Modi government.
On Sunday, some Congress supporters on Twitter noticed that Sibal had unfollowed the Congress vice president, Rahul Gandhi and the official Twitter handle of Congress on the microblogging site.
Among the five people he’s now following include journalists, Rajdeep Sardesai, Barkha Dutt, former finance minister, P Chidambaram, Political Secretary to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Ahmed Patel, and a twitter handle of his fan group.
A Twitter handle of Congress supporter, @sunny_congress wrote, “so @KapilSibal are you planning to quit the party. you have unfollowed @INCIndia and @OfficeOfRG. Any plans to join BJPig (sic)”

Curiously, Sibal did not post any tweet on the birth anniversary of former prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi. Another prominent name, which did not post any tweet on Rajiv Gandhi on Sunday was Chidambaram, who is one of the two top Congress leaders Sibal is currently following. Like Sibal, Chidambaram too is no longer following Rahul Gandhi.
Last month, days before he quit Congress, Gujarat’s Shankarsinh Vaghela too had unfollowed Rahul Gandhi.
Top Rahul Gandhi aides appeared shocked by the latest development. Some of the advisors that Janta Ka Reporter spoke to were non-committal on the issue.
Hours after Janta Ka Reporter carried the story, Sibal had decided to follow back Rahul and Congress. Sources close to the former HRD minister said that a member of the social media team had accidentally unfollowed the two accounts.
However, the account they hastily followed back assuming it to be of the Congress’s was not the official Twitter handle of the party.
Janta Ka Reporter highlighted this aspect and minutes later Team Sibal had corrected their error.
Junior Gandhi is likely to take over the party as its president in October this year. There are reports of discontent among the senior leaders within the party with many alleging that Gandhi had sidelined them and was relying more on his ‘young’ advisors.
