Jitin Prasada, former close aide of Rahul Gandhi, quits Congress to join BJP

In a setback to the Congress, one of the close aides of Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday joined the BJP in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and Rajya Sabha MP Anil Baluni. Jitin Prasada decided to quit the Congress after losing three successive elections since 2014.

Speaking at the press conference organised by the BJP, Prasada said, “I’ve realised over the last 8-10 years after meeting people and travelling across the country that the BJP was the only real institutional political outfit. The rest has been reduced to the individual-centric and regional outfit.”

He said that the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were sincerely working towards the welfare of India.

Earlier, Baluni had tweeted, “An Eminent personality will join BJP today (Wednesday) 09 June, 1 PM at BJP HQ, 6A DDU Marg, New Delhi.” This had triggered speculations with many predicting that Rajasthan’s Sachin Pilot could be the one jumping the ship.

Prasada was made a union minister immediately after he won his first parliamentary polls in 2004 at the age of 31. However, he has been unable to win a single polls since the Congress was voted out of power in 2014. He also tried his luck in the assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh in 2017, but had to face defeat. In 2019 too, Prasada failed to get himself elected to the parliament.

Prasada said that his work would speak for himself in the future.

Prasada had earlier met Home Minister Amit Shah before addressing the media.

His quitting Congress assumes significance since assembly polls are due in Uttar Pradesh in February next year.
