Goa’s woman Congress leader alleges gangrape threat from supporters of BJP leader

A senior female functionary of Goa Congress has alleged that a supporter of BJP’s Subhash Shirodkar threatened her with gangrape if she campaigned against their leader.

Diya Shetkar was quick to file a police complaint, in which she stated that an unidentified person had called her on Sunday issuing gangrape threat while warning her not to enter the Siroda constituency. Shetkar, who is the Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress state secretary, said that the caller also used ‘abusive and vulgar language’ while threatening her with gangrape.

News agency ANI quoted her as saying, “To harass a woman, Shirodkar’s supporters have stooped so low to threaten me with gangrape.” She has now asked the state police to treat the matter ‘very seriously.’

“They threatened me that I would get gang-raped If I came to Shiroda again and they warned me not to visit Subhash Shirodkar’s area again,” she said in her complaint, according to a Times of India report.

Shirodkar had joined the BJP after stepping down as the Congress MLA for Siroda in October this year.Shirodkar had joined the BJP along with another Congress MLA  Dayanand Sopte after meeting BJP President Amit Shah in Delhi.

Meanwhile, Shetkar, who is also a lawyer, told news agency IANS that she had earlier campaigned against him. Shirodkar, for his part, has not responded to the allegations yet.

Goa has been in the news for the poor health of its chief minister, Manohar Parrikar, who is undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer. The Congress has alleged that the reason why Parrikar was not being removed despite his poor health adversely impacting the governance because the latter knew too many secrets related to what’s being billed as Rafale scam.

Goa Congress President Girish Chodankar had told reporters in Panjim, “If they upset him, he may put those details in the public domain.” The state Congress president was reacting a day after it was reported that Parrikar had called his cabinet meeting at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences last week. This had not gone down well with many on social media, where an overwhelming majority of users accused Parrikar of being greedy for power.

In the 40-seat Goa assembly, Congress has 16, while the ruling BJP 13. With the help of GFP, MGP, NCP and independent, the ruling alliance has a majority of 23 MLAs.
