Girl raped twice in Maharashtra as trap set by police fails to protect her

A 17-year-old rape survivor in Jalna, Maharashtra was allegedly raped again by the same offenders on Friday evening when the police, in efforts to set a trap, asked her to meet the culprits.

On Saturday, the authorities suspended Assistant Police Inspector Vinod Ejjapwar for the botched-up operation. The two alleged rapists have also been arrested.

Police said the two men (in their 20s) accosted the girl and her boyfriend to an isolated spot along Nava Road on the evening of July 7 and after dragging her to a forest, raped her on knife-point.

The men also took the girl’s mobile phone and shot a clip of the act. The girl narrated the incident to her mother after reaching home and a police complaint was lodged by the parent.

Later, the two culprits started calling the girl on her mother’s number, demanding Rs. 2000 for returning her phone, that allegedly had the video clip in it. On Friday evening, the accused asked the girl to come to a fly-over and collect her phone.

Police asked the girl to go at the spot so that the accused could be trapped. However, the culprit duo intercepted the girl while she rode her two-wheeler towards the spot, and took her to a jungle before raping her again.

The girl then went back to the police, who combed the area and caught the two culprits. Although the girl’s mobile phone was recovered, no objectionable video content was found in it.

Police did not name the accused but said that they had committed similar crimes in the past. An investigation has been ordered.
