Samajwadi chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday announced that he would provide free electricity up to 300 units for domestic consumption and the use for irrigation purposes.

Yadav took to Twitter to make the announcement, “Greetings and good wishes for the New Year. In 2022, the new light will welcome the new year in the new UP. 300 units of electricity will be free along with the irrigation bill. Let there be peace and prosperity for everyone in the new year. The SP government will come and make sure everyone gets 300 units of electricity for domestic use and irrigation purpose.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath wasted no time in reacting to Yadav’s poll promise. Addressing an election rally in Rampur, Adityanath said, “I was just reading that the national president of the Samajwadi Party, babua (term used by Adityanath for Akhilesh Yadav), said something today. He promised to provide free electricity if he comes to power. If you did not provide electricity, where’s the question of giving it free?”

Uttar Pradesh goes to polls in February this year. Yadav’s promise to provide 300 units of free electricity is being deemed as a gamechanger. Many analysts feel that this would help sway a large chunk of UP voters, who are poorer than people living in other Indian states. This has yielded rich dividends to the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi, where Arvind Kejriwal was voted to power for the second time in a row.
