The Delhi Police came under considerable condemnation on Thursday’s for its inaction on the viral video of a woman being mercilessly thrashed by a cop’s son. Such was their arrogance that despite several journalists tagging the Delhi Police and its DCP rank officers, they chose to look the other way.

The content of the video was gruesome and was enough to shake the collective conscience of any sane individuals. But, the Delhi Police had its own compulsions. True to its much-maligned image of being one of the most corrupt forces in the country, the Delhi Police chose to sleep over the matter because the man in the video brutally thrashing a helpless woman was the son of a police officer.

It took an outrage by media and the intervention of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh for the Delhi Police to wake up from its slumber and detect the severity of the crime. Within hours of Singh’s tweet, the man, Rohit Tomar was arrested.

A day later, on Saturday, the cops also arrested another two individuals, Ali Hasan (24) and Rajesh (30). Ali, the owner of the call centre, where the girl was thrashed, had recorded the video. Rajesh works as a peon at the same call centre.

Tomar has been booked for criminal intimidation and molestation and the other of rape based on the complaints by two women. Tomar had allegedly shown the violent video to his ex-girlfriend in a bid to frighten her so that she could marry him.

The first case was registered on Thursday at the Tilak Nagar police station in West Delhi following a complaint by Tomar’s woman friend alleging that he showed her a video in which he could be seen thrashing a woman, Deputy Commission of Police (DCP West) Monika Bhardwaj was quoted by PTI.

The second case was registered at the Uttam Nagar police station after another woman, who was seen in the video, approached the police on Friday alleging that on September 2, Rohit had called her to his friend’s office in Uttam Nagar and raped her, added the news agency’s report.

In the viral video, Tomar, the son of a Delhi police officer, was seen punching, slapping and kicking in the girl’s private part. His act was filmed by his film, believed to be one Ali.

Rohit is the son of Ashok Kumar Tomar, an assistant sub-inspector with the Delhi Police in the central district. The accused was employed with a call centre till last month and is currently unemployed. He is a second year student of Delhi University, where he is pursuing BA (programme) through correspondence.
