Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Wednesday launched a tirade against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah over the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Sibal likened Modi and Shah to ‘two dinosaurs’ adding that the passage of the CAB will convert India into a Jurassic Republic.
Sibal also hit out at Modi and Shah accusing them of having no idea about the idea of India. He said, “Those who have no idea of India cannot protect the idea of India.” He urged Shah to immediately withdraw the Bill saying that it threatened to disintegrate the country.
Sibal also took a potshot at Shah for his lack of knowledge about the Indian freedom struggle and history saying that he was wrong to blame the Congress for India’s partition. “I don’t understand which history books the Home Minister has read. The two-nation theory is not our theory. It was perpetrated by Savarkar,” Sibal continued.
The Lok Sabha has already approved the CAB, which was tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. The government is likely to win the majority in the Upper House of the parliament too.
The Bill provides automatic citizenship to non-Muslim infiltrators living in the country. These religious groups are Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists and Parsis. The Union Cabinet had cleared the Bill last week.
The passage of the Bill will decide India’s future as a secular country since this will be the first time that the country will legally discriminate against Muslims because of their faith.
Home Minister Amit Shah had minced no words while campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal that his government will provide laws to grant Indian citizenship to all non-Muslim refugees living in India.
The Federal US Commission on International Religious Freedom on Tuesday called for a ban against Amit Shah and other top leaders in the Indian government if the Citizenship Amendment Bill is passed in the Rajya Sabha. The chilling statement by the USCIRF came hours after the Lok Sabha passed the controversial Bill aimed at giving citizenship to every single illegal immigrant living in India except Muslims.
