Cherish freedom, ensure inclusive growth: Hamid Ansari

Terming the 74th anniversary of ‘Quit India Movement’ launched by Mahatma Gandhi as a historic day and a reminder to cherish the gift of freedom, Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari on Tuesday urged members to ensure inclusive development involving all sections of the people.

The movement “exhorts us to draw inspiration from the words and deeds of our freedom fighters to unitedly face the challenges of the changing times and do our bit to ensure inclusive economic development and growth for all strata of society and realise the long cherished dream of a fully developed India,” the Vice President said.

He said the day was “a reminder to cherish the gift of freedom handed down by those brave men and women and reaffirm our committment to uphold the sovereignty, integrity, unity and diversity of our country.

” Ansari said the Father of the Nation, launched the ‘Quit India Movement’ in 1942 on this day and “the clarion call of ‘do or die’ by Mahatma Gandhi led to an upsurge of nationalistic sentiments and heralded the attainment of Independence.

” He said the martyrs laid down their lives and underwent immense sufferings for the cause of freedom. The House paid tributes to the martyrs with members observing silence as a mark of respect.
