Police in Telangana have arrested three boys for killing a 16-year-old girl after she revealed that one of them had made her pregnant. The main accused, a 17-year-old student, was arrested with his two other other friends, who helped him murder his girlfriend near Lakshmipuram in Visakhapatnam.

According to media reports, the girl’s father P Eswara Rao had filed a missing complaint about his 16-year-old daughter in Visakhapatnam on 7 November after she did not return home. The deceased was a second year intermediate student.

The girl, identified as Padmavati, was reportedly in a relationship with the main accused for the last one year. Around two weeks ago, the girl informed the boy that she was pregnant. Frightened by the prospect of potential reprisal from the girl’s family, he advised her to abort the child using pills. But the girl refused. This prompted the boy to hatch a murder plan.

“On the evening of November 7, he summoned her to a nearby playground. When she arrived, he hit her with a rod and then strangled her to death with the help of his two friends. Then they poured petrol and set the body on fire in an attempt to prevent identification. But the body was only partially burnt. The main accused has confessed to killing her. We are unable to understand why the two friends of the main accused agreed to help him as they knew he planned to murder her,” Indian Express quoted a police officer as saying.

The murder of Padmavati had sparked protests in the area, forcing police to launch a search operation. Later her body was found near a timber depot.

Police have said that they were waiting for the post mortem report to decide whether she was indeed pregnant and also to understand the real cause of her death.
