Bollywood actor Kriti Sanon voiced her anger against the former Karnataka top cop for his comments meant for Nirbhaya’s mother in a recent event, organised to honour women.
Kriti wrote, “This is ridiculous!!! Which world are ppl living in? Rather what kinda world are we living in!!!.” She was reacting to the comments made by HT Sangliana, who served as the Director General of Police in Karnataka, for Asha Devi.
Sangliana had stunned the audience of the event, organised to honour women, last week when he said, “I see Nirbhaya’s mother, she has such a good physique. I can just imagine how beautiful Nirbhaya would have been.” His outrageous comments did not end here. He went on to suggest that women should surrender to their rapists and follow the cases later. “if you are overpowered, you should surrender and follow up the case later. That way we can be safe, save our life,” he was quoted as saying.
Nirbhaya’s mother, Asha Devi, too was being felicitated at the event. Also present at the event was IPS officer D Roopa, who tweeted the photos but did not express her outrage on the former DG’s disgusting comments. She wrote, “Met Nirbhaya’s mother today. She spoke how the society stigmatises rape victims rather than stigmatising the culprits. It’s for citizens to play active role in checking crimes against women. Ex MP, retd IPS Sangliana was present I received “Nirbhaya Award” on the occasion.”
Music director Vishal Dadlani too took to Twitter to express disgust. He wrote, “Are. You. F****ng. Serious!?” DCW Chief Swati Maliwal wrote, “He’s spoken such an extremely disgusting thing. Can’t believe that this man once served as a senior IPS officer. Don’t know what more vulgar acts this man of such shameful thoughts would have committed during his tenure. The pension should be stopped for such mad man.”
Sangliana had later defended his statements, “As an ex-police DGP (Director General of Police), I consider my statement to be totally within limits. It should be taken in the right spirit. It was complimentary and without ill intention – if it was mistaken by anybody I feel sorry for them…Some people are extra-sensitive.”
