Singh’s resignation came even as probe continued to look into the brutal crackdown by the university administration against the protesting girls on the campus. These girls were protesting against the shaming of one of their female colleagues, who was molested by three bike-borne men while out and about in the campus.

The men had alleged attempted to insert their hands inside the girl’s shirt with some even trying to unzip her trouser. When she complained about the incident to the university, they blamed her for being out so late in the evening.

This had led to massive protests on the campus. The university administration had deployed huge police force, which launched a brutal crackdown over the weekend.

A number of students, including women, and two journalists were injured in the lathicharge by the police. Some policemen were also injured in the clashes during which students indulged in arson, police sources said.

Violence erupted after some students, protesting against the alleged eve-teasing incident of Thursday, wanted to meet the Vice Chancellor at his residence last night, according to police and university sources.

The security guards of the university stopped them and the police was informed, according to the University sources.

VC Tripathi was widely condemned for his inept handling of the protests and also his comments that the university cimply could not deal with every complaint of the girl staying in the hostel.
